For the enzymes which are decisively involved in the formation of the flavonoid pattern in Osteospermum hybrids (Asteraceae), cDNA fragments and full-length cDNA clones were isolated. The latter were heterologously expressed in yeast and the recombinant proteins were tested regarding to their activity and substrate specificity. Furthermore, by means of sequence analysis and the construction of chimeric genes, the molecular basis of the substrate specificity of dihydroflavonol 4-reductase as well as the of the functional difference between flavonoid 3-hydroxylase and flavonoid 35-hydroxylase were investigated.
