The aim of this thesis was to gain further knowledge of the molecular structure and size of Humic Substances (HS) and their methylated derivatives. The HS were methylated with methyl iodide and diazomethane. The resulting derivatives were analysed by 1D- and 2D-NMR-Spectroscopy. Asymmetric Flow-Fieldflowfractionation (AFFFF) measurements in aqueous solution were carried out to determine molecular weights, diameters and diffusion coefficients of the HS. Furthermore, AFFFF was used for the first time to examine methylated HS in organic solvents (Methanol, THF).
