Purpose of the following study was to evaluate the influence of orthoses on the proprioception of the upper ankle. Using an alternative study design, the muscle tendon reflex during an acute ankle sprain was simulated to the peroneus muscles by triggering an h-reflex. In addition mechanical and proprioceptive properties of the brace were separated. The resulting reflex action potentials of 20 subjects were recorded through EMG and statistically evaluated. It turned out that the simulated muscle tendon reflex was significantly stronger (α=0,025) while wearing an orthosis. The increase was at least 20 %, compared to measurements without ankle brace.
