NF-kB/Rel-transcription factors play a central role in chronic inflammatory processes in atherosclerosis. Activated platelets could activate the NF-kB-system and the IkB-kinase (IKK)-complex in endothelial cells. However nicotine, a classical risk factor in atherogenesis, could only activate the NF-kB-system in very high doses in endothelial cells, whereas nandrolone (anabolic steroid) as well as rapamycine (immunosuppressant) showed no effects. Furthermore, the NF-kB-activation status in vivo in Aorta und A. carotis of the ApoE-deficient mouse was investigated in this study.
