The expression of Stromelysin-3 (St-3) in invasive and non-invasive neoplasms of the urinary bladder was studied. With the help of the techniques of immunohistochemistry and in-situ hybridisation it was shown, that St-3 could be a possible indicator for more agressive urinary bladder carcinomas: 73,2% of the invasive urinary bladder carcinomas were St-3 positive; the St-3 expression correlated with the tumor staging (pT1-2 to pT3-4: p=0,048), the lymphatic vessel invasion (p=0,026) and the invasion pattern (p=0,0027). In contrast St-3 cannot be used as a diagnostic marker for prognosis for the early invasion of preinvasive lesions of the urinary bladder: St-3 was found in 14,8% of non-invasive papillarey urinary bladder carcinomas. However, St-3 was never found in carcinomas in-situ, which have a higher potential for invasion.
