The rhythmic activity of pacemaker cells in heart and brain is controlled by the Ih current. The four members of the HCN channel family form the molecular basis of Ih. In this thesis, the expression of HCN1-4 in heart, ZNS and the peripheral nervous system was examined with molecular-biological, biochemical and histological methods. In the sino-atrial node, HCN4 is expressed particularly strong. In the brain each of the four HCN channel genes shows a characteristic distribution pattern. The heterogeneity of native Ih can thus be explained at least in part by the differential Expression of the HCN channels.
