In order to further improve a vehicle’s handling, benefits were found by utilizing variable distribution of drive torque. This document demonstrates that the influence on improving driving behavior is more apparent when torque is vectored transversely as compared to varying torque between the axles. For this detailed analysis, a differential with additional gear sets and clutches was simulated, and integrated into a vehicle modelled for multi-body simulation. Real world considerations for the layout of the design as an automotive differential were also taken into account. The fundamental section of this work focuses on the simulations in regard to the effect of variable torque distribution as dependent on the driving axle (FWD, RWD or AWD) as well as the enhancement of agility and stability.
