Speciality chemicals and pharmaceutical agents are produced in small amounts that are usually required in very high purities. These chemicals have high market prices, and either short life cycles, or a fluctuating demand. They are therefore produced in multi-purpose discontinuous processes. These processes usually consist of complex chemical reactions and separation processes. In batch synthesis, the chemical reaction and separation tasks are in general sequentially ordered. On the contrary, in the so-called „reactive distillation processes“, the reactions and separations are carried out simultaneously in one unit-operation. This might lead to higher chemical conversions and product selectivity or to simplified product purification. The aim of this work is the development and analysis of novel batch distillation processes, obtained by varying the position of the feed tank and of the reactor. The operations of these novel processes are described, their advantages are underlined, and their application fields are marked.
