The goal of this work is to provide precise and up-to-date information to car drivers, according to the needs of their individual situation. Pursuing this goal, the developed CARISMA system selforganizes, independently and autonomously, the direct wireless transfer of sensor data between automobiles. Varying system analyses and simulations clarify the behaviour of the resulting vehicle ad-hoc network and provide insight to its characteristics. The CARISMA protocol design takes into account the special network properties and the very dynamic topology. The developed methods allow the efficient and targeted exchange of information between vehicles on the road. The CARISMA system assesses the situation-dependent benefit of the information and decentrally controls the communication with its distributed components. It enables a variety of new functions and applications in automobiles and is able to contribute considerably to a highly accurate and up-to-date driver information.
