In the present work photo-switchable peptides were investigated. Amino and carboxy functionalized azobenzene derivatives were incorporated as reversible photo triggers into synthetic peptides containing active-site sequences of natural enzymes and cell adhesion motifs allowing for their photomodulation of conformations and biophysical properties. As biologically relevant model systems ligands of the cell adhesion receptor aVb3 integrin, the redox potential of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) and, additionally, conformational changes in a ß-hairpin as tertiary structural element of proteins were used.
