Mechanisms and regulators in the building skin have to be able to react flexibly to different outer conditions and individual requirements for the indoor climate. In the range of facade openings this is carried out by movable and modifiable components. In the doctoral thesis the potential range of performance of vertical sliding elements is displayed with the objective of improving the buildings energy consumption and the users comfort. Besides the possible applications of vertical sliding windows as ventilation elements, the combination with other components (shading device, glare protection) by the use of the vertical sliding mechanism for all movable elements is investigated. By the means of this very effective and capable concept the facade provides a reactive system that can adapt to changing functional requirements. For a first application close to reality in scale 1:1 the developed multilayered facade system has been assembled at the chairs Station for Solar Research.
