In order to quantify the technical potential of heat pumps for the decentralized heat supply of residential buildings in Germany, models were developed to map the demand and supply of heat energy on the basis of geospatial and statistical data for each residential building nationwide. Outside air, the ground and the combination of solar-air collectors and ice storage were investigated as heat sources. The key result is the proportion of buildings suitable for heat pumps, differentiated by categories such as city or building types.
