Ecosystem-based approaches have gained increasing attention for urban climate adaptation. This thesis assesses their current state of integration and their effectiveness for regulating extreme events. In municipal adaptation strategies of German cities references to the components of ecosystem-based approaches could be identified. Scenario modelling further revealed the contribution of different types of green infrastructure to heat and runoff mitigation, but showed varying potentials. Finally, practical implications for urban planning were discussed.
