Mobile generators are used for the auxiliary power supply of low voltage grids during maintenance work of distribution system operators. During the islanded grid operation of conventional mobile generators, distributed generation systems are disconnected, by increasing the grid frequency, to prevent a destabilisation of the islanded grid. To avoid this disconnection, a hybrid mobile generator consisting of a grid forming inverter, a battery storage system and an additional range extender is under development. A tool was developed to dimension the inverter and range extender size and the battery capacity, as well as for the operational planning of this hybrid mobile generator. The tool considers grid data, the operating period (time and duration) and the weather forecast. The development and structure of this tool, calculation results and the validation against recorded measurements from operations in two real-life grids are described. Based on that, resulting recommendations for operational planning are discussed.
