Due to medical advances, the survival rate of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD) has increased substantially. Yet, nearly all ACHD remain chronically ill and face mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. To date, knowledge of their psychological situation and their need for psychological support is limited. This dissertation investigates quality of life (QOL) and indices of psychosocial adjustment to CHD. Findings suggest a vital need to make psychological care an integral part of a holistic, collaborative treatment approach which is tailored to their unique needs and experiences.
