Deltahedral [Ge
9] clusters were used as synthons in reactions towards transition metal complexes and main group element compounds. While reactions with organometallic complexes resulted in the formation of transition metal-coordinated and -filled intermetalloid clusters, in reactions towards halo-boranes an oxidative coupling or a boranyl-functionalization was observed. Furthermore, the germanium clusters are Lewis bases allowing for a frustrated Lewis acid-base-like activation of solvent molecules, producing intensely colored clusters.
