A major part of the BASAJAUN project deals with the use of resources along the cascade of transformation of wooden resources and the development of new construction products from these resources as well as the demonstration in real buildings. The focus is on the careful use of resources, i.e. not only virgin materials but also recycled materials from secondary material flows, which were former waste streams. This means that primary, virgin resources are substituted, which contributes to a reduction in environmental impact and prolongs biogenic carbon storage in products. Thus, this repeated use of bio-based resources following the cascade of utilisation reduces the current carbon footprint of the products and stores biogenic
carbon in construction products for a quite long time, normally far longer than consumer products. Different barriers hinder the industry to focus on wood waste and its further reuse or recovery as well as the production of reusable or recoverable products. To encourage them transfer their focus on this point, different concepts related to cascading of wood are explained and recommendations are given how this changed focus can help to reduce global warming potential.
