The process of strengthening biological weakened wood on works of art, archaeological and technical cultural assets as well as on historical monuments probably belongs to the techniques of preservation which are mainly based on empirical methods of investigation. On the one hand this estimation is based on a shortage of investigations dealing with this problem, on the other hand reasons can be found in the peculiarity of the described measure.
The study in question aimed to gain fundamental knowledge about a possibility to increase the firmness of degraded wood. Therefore I used the patented kettle-pressure-process of the "IBACH Steinkonservierung" company requiring a complete soaking of untreated wood of oak, pine and spruce with methylmethacrylat. In this connection I analysed the pliability and the steadiness of pressure of untreated as well as of damped and dried wood after the soaking process.
Furthermore the study includes statements related to the soaking process by the "IBACH Steinkonservierung" company which in this case was used on wood. Above, this treatise for the first time shows tendencies and deals with problems according to the procedure of strengthening wood which has been used in the field of preservation of stones for years. The results produced during this investigation can be useful as an index to the preservation of wood by complete soakingthe material with methylmethacrylat.
