Since 1854 the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum München keeps an altarpiece, dated 1521, coming from Bad Reichenhall. Except from the removal of the upper parts, the piece has hardly been altered in its framings or panel paintings. The altarpiece shows stylistic aspects of the gothic as well as of the renaissance age. The exact origin is unknown. The ascriptions to a certain artist or circle of artists do vary. This diploma thesis contents the description of the altarpiece and the results of its technological examination. Its current state of preservation is described and, based on this, a conservation concept is developed. New insights into the origin of the altarpiece are presented. The artist is characterized by his technological and artistic features.
