High voltage direct current transmission represent a possible solution for the transmission of large amounts of electrical energy over large distances. With regard to the design and the optimization of metal enclosed gas insulated systems under high dc voltage, a model was developed and implemented into a FEM program which describes the nonlinear field depending conductivity of gases by taking into consideration the relevant physical mechanisms. Factors of influence on the electric field and possible field grading by low conductive insulator coatings are investigated and verified by measurements of the surface potential on cylindrical epoxy resin insulators.
