There is a large body of literature and research on collaborative housing (Lang et al., 2020), as the phenomenon is gaining more interest from research, politics, and practice – internationally and in Germany, especially since the 2000s. However, little research exists on the relations between collaborative housing and neighbourhoods. The paper presents first results and observations of our interdisciplinary housing, urban, and family studies research on collaborative housing and neighbourhoods in Bavaria, Germany. A systematic literature review examines the dynamics between collaborative housing projects and their surroundings. Furthermore, the paper describes the procedure of selecting case studies for collaborative housing projects in Bavaria, Germany, using criteria extracted from the literature review. Our aim is to contribute to the research gap identified (Glogar, 2022) on the relations between collaborative housing and neighbourhoods, and to further develop a theoretical conceptualization of the phenomenon.
