Employment of older individuals in Germany has experienced a remarkable reversal around the late 1990s. In two chapters, this dissertation investigates how much of these trends can be explained by the changing incentives due to public pension reforms from 1980 to 2015. Key concept in this context is the “implicit tax on working longer”. Chapters 4 and 5 investigate flexible retirement reforms enacted in OECD countries in an internationally comparative perspective. In Chapter 6, the dissertation analyzes working pensioners across Europe by employing SHARE data.
