Research is presented that shows how lightweight concrete structures can be fabricated using different
additive manufacturing technologies. Lightweight concretes unite the capabilities of load bearing and
thermal insulation in one material. This enables the construction of monolithic building skins without
the need for further insulation, resulting in building elements of low complexity, high robustness and
good recyclability. Combining additive manufacturing with these materials can be utilised for an
optimisation of building physics and structure by altering element thickness or by building internal
structures of varying density. In addition, by forming internal channels, slots and niches, further
functionality can be integrated into the building elements.
