In three overarching research objectives, this dissertation investigated (i) options for the implementation and optimization of a novel biofiltration concept, applicable as an additional above-ground treatment step during municipal wastewater treatment to achieve an enhanced degradation of trace organic chemicals, (ii) tools for an improved characterization of in situ redox conditions in biofiltration systems, and (iii) the potential of and the benefits from combining biological with oxidative and/or adsorptive advanced treatment processes.
