Retrofitting is a new post-synthetic modification method for designing the materials properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this dissertation, the installation of the cross linker (CL) TCNQ (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) between the open metal sites of Cu
3BTC
2 (BTC = 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate) was investigated as a model system, which proved to be a powerful tool to systematically tune the mechanical and electronic properties of the MOF. The general applicability of this approach was demonstrated and design strategies are provided to guide the synthesis of other functional CL@MOF materials.
