Biotechnological processes allow for sustainable conversion of renewable biomass into complex natural products. In this context, a holistic, biotechnological production process for the generation and purification of terpenoids was developed. This encompassed bacterial strain development, fermentation process optimization and establishment of improved purification concepts. Terpene synthases were mutated providing access to hardly available, structural complex sesqui- and diterpenoids. Targeted modification of the terpene skeletons was successfully demonstrated by biotransformation approaches applying cytochrome P450 monooxygenase and lipase mediated epoxidation reactions.
