It is difficult to discuss concepts (like “model” or “design”) that have a large variance of interpretation. This chapter addresses some views on design, design process, and product design. Exemplary models for process and product aspects are presented. The definition and nature of “model” show important characteristics like transformation and reduction, but also their focus on purpose and subject. The discussion of quality and requirements for modeling is mainly based on these characteristics. The procedure of building and using a model in general is followed by final thoughts about models of design.
