The research conducted in this thesis investigated the response of mitochondria to targeted irradiation using charged ions. To understand the inherent mitochondrial response to radiation, live cell imaging of mitochondria in tumor cells was performed during targeted microbeam irradiation at the microbeam facility SNAKE. Membrane potential, membrane integrity and production of superoxide was analysed. The results show that individual mitochondria can be targeted and analysed in real time to enable a better understanding of mitochondrial response to stress.
