The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is a central signal of the abiotic stress response. The ABA signalling cascade is composed of four classes of proteins. The goal of this study was to transfer the ABA signalling cascade into a heterologous organism. By reconstructing the ABA-signalling cascade in yeast, it was possible to rebuild a complete phytohormone signal transduction in a non-plant organism for the first time and to study the function and regulation of its components in vivo outside of the plant cell.
