This work investigates the electric machine’s potential of saving energy during a driving cycle by the use of the overload capability (for IM and PMSM). It is shown, that moving a few particular operational points to the overload area is advantageous for the overall energy consumption. For the execution of the necessary simulations, a machine design tool following the state of the art is developed and subsequently improved further. Additionally, the influence of certain parameters (e.g. the slot fill factor and others) is investigated.
