Bevel and hypoid gears are used for the power transmission between non-parallel axes e.g. in passenger cars and commercial vehicles as well as in trains, helicopters and ships. Bevel gears with offset (hypoid gears) show a higher risk of scuffing (welding of surfaces) with increasing offsets. For an optimized design of the tribo-system consisting of gears and lubricant exact calculation methods are needed. The current methods, however, show specific disadvantages concerning the consideration of offset and real contact conditions. The dissertation “Scuffing Load Carrying Capacity of Bevel and Hypoid Gears” describes a new calculation method which is based on systematic experimental investigations. It also contains fundamental new findings about the local coefficient of friction. With this new method the user is enabled to find an optimized design as well as to recalculate gears concerning their scuffing load capacity.
