To cope with individualization and the high costs of downtimes, modern production systems should be flexible and adaptable. Multi-Agent-Systems are a suitable technology to address both challenges by decentralizing modern production systems and thus making them more flexible and resilient. However, the agent paradigm is still not widely applied. One of the key reasons is that the individual product and resource agents require knowledge bases in a computer-interpretable form. So far, these had to be created manually, which is cumbersome, error-prone, and insufficiently standardized. Digital Twins have the potential to solve this issue, as they provide standardized descriptions of relevant information.
