Efficient and user-friendly support of hierarchical data in a relational database system is a challenging task due to the differing nature of hierarchical and relational data. In this thesis, a comprehensive framework for this task is developed. It contains back end considerations, such as data structures and relational operators for efficient query evaluation, and front end considerations, such as a high-usability query language. Using this framework, existing relational database systems can be enhanced to support hierarchical data efficiently and to blend it seamlessly with relational data.
