Automation engineering is a key technology in industrial production. Its importance is underlined by industry trends such as industry 4.0 and by the rising cost share of software development in engineer¬ing. The objectives of this Ph. D. thesis are the analysis of existing notations of the IEC 61131-3 in contrast to new approaches in terms of their effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction as well as their influence on software modularity. Also, the development of a scientifically based methodology is carried out, that allows inferences about potential influence factors in the studied domain.
