Improving business process performance is still a top priority of CIOs. However, many organizations are daunted by the challenges and risks that business process change (BPC) imposes. The staggering failure rates of BPC projects signify that practitioners and researchers still lack a clear understanding of the determinants impacting BPC success. This thesis begins to address this gap by answering the research question: what are the determinants for successful IT-enabled BPC. In order to answer this question, we conduct a comprehensive literature review, a case survey with 128
BPC projects and multiple case studies. For researchers, our research will expand the huge body of existing literature in the field of BPC and will provide a step toward a much needed theory of BPC. For practitioners, our findings will provide considerable support for determining which factors they need to consider when improving their business processes.
