With a growing body of reference models from research and business practice the issue of evaluating their quality and utility becomes more pressing. In this paper, we particularly argue for an application-oriented approach of evaluation in order to substantiate the explicit claim or implicit assumption of the utility of reusing reference models for designing IS and business solutions. Since there are numerous options and difficulties in assessing the effects of applying reference models, we use a supply chain analogy to differentiate distinct objectives for an application-oriented evaluation of reference models and discuss their implications. The results are used to extend an existing framework for reference model evaluation.
