Automated systems are complex hardware-software-systems, highly depending on the quality of the underlying software engineering. This article shall lead to a more comprehensive understanding of automation and software engineering in this domain by clarifying the specific requirements and, thus, enable a tighter cooperation with computer science. The fundamental requirements, which result from the functional structure as well as from the constraints of the automated system's lifecycle, will be identified. Based thereon methods and tools can be improved and, thus, increase the quality of software engineering.
