Real-time PCR methods for the detection of 38 polymorphisms in 17 candidate genes have been established and 585 psychiatric inpatients were genotyped. Serum concentrations of the 6 most commonly used psychotropics were analysed by HPLC-MS/MS.
CYP450 gene polymorphisms were associated with different serum concentrations and partly, differences in response and side effects were identified (CYP2D6 and CYP2C19).
In pharmacodynamic structures, notably serotonin transporter variants were linked with higher side effect rates, reduced response and prolonged hospitalization in patients with SSRI.
