The risk of nitrate leaching was examined, based on a Bavarian-wide inventory and supplementary studies at the regional and local scale. Small-scale studies confirmed the appropriateness of the applied sampling and soil extraction methods. 15 % of the stands show high (10-25 mg l-1) and 8% very high (>50 mg l-1) nitrate concentrations below the main rooting zone (ConcNO3). Significant influences of deposition indicators and the C/N ratio of humus on ConcNO3 demonstrate causal relationships. Nevertheless, primarily ConcNO3 is determined by site characteristics (substrate, vegetation type, precipitation).
