The productivity of metal cutting machine tools is often limited by dynamic process instabilities (i.e. chatter). Hence, an electrodynamic active vibration control system was developed and successfully tested at a portal milling machine and at a generation grinding machine. At both machines unstable cutting processes could be stabilised. Thus, significant savings of primary processing time as well as of energy consumption were realised. Moreover, an application-oriented methodology for the design of active vibration control systems for chatter suppression was developed.
