Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis (SBP) is the most common bacterial infection in cirrhotic patients with ascites. This retrospective study examined 101 inpatient cases of SBP of Klinikum rechts der Isar from January 2002 to August 2006. It analyzes resistance spectrum of cultured pathogens, frequency of treatment failure of guideline antbiotic therapy and their impact on mortality. Almost a quarter of the pathogens were resistant to first line therapy. In this group, mortality was increased. This study shows the important finding of a change in spectrum of pathogens of SBP and brings up the question of therapeutic consequences.
