Mass Customization strategies have become the focus of an increasing number of interdisciplinary research projects. New approaches in many different fields are required to deal with the complexity of products and processes for Mass Customization. In this paper we present requirements for a product model for Mass Customization. Our requirements include the customer, product development and production perspective. An account of the state of the art in product modelling has revealed that existing product models are too inflexible for Mass Customisation. On the basis of these shortcomings and the identified requirements we have developed a new approach for Mass Customisation product models. The key advantage of our approach is the flexibility, with which product decomposition and specification of part characteristics of product parts can be combined in one product structure model. This allows for a highly flexible product model specification for the product designer, while allowing simpler configuration for the customer.
