This thesis covers two examples for energy saving construction materials.
Aerogels are highly effective heat insulation materials for e.g. construction applications because of their nanoporous structure. In this thesis, the synthesis and characterization of MgCO
3 aerogels is presented as a possible alternative to the commercially used silica aerogels.
The second part of the thesis refers to a former publication of another group which presents calcium oxide as visible light photocatalyst for the degradation of organic contaminants. The own, more in-depth studies on the decolourisation of a dye in presence of CaO, which was stated as a proof for the photocatalytic activity, clearly proved that CaO is not a photocatalyst. Instead, only a photochemical decolourisation of the dye was observed.
