The effects of sedation with propofol on EEG was investigated in a volunteer study using the bispectral index (BIS) and the nonlinear parameters symbolic transfer entropy (STEn) and permutation entropy (PeEn). In this setting PeEn, STEn and the derived TSK-index (including drug concentration information, PeEn and StEn) performed better (with a higher prediction probability) than BIS or drug concentration information alone in predicting the dynamic phase of transition from wakefulness to unconsciousness and vice versa.
