The Access Manager framework provides modular extensibility to a standard database management system (DBMS). Therefore it opens an operational DBMS in selected areas, by introducing a concise interface to the DBMS’s internal components. The DBMS functions as a host system for accommodating application domain-specific plug-ins, such as access modules for alternative primary and secondary access methods, custom algorithmic units implementing auxiliary transformations, and a potent data integration layer. The proposed interface particularly emphasizes full participation of extension modules in the host system’s intrinsic query optimization process. A prototype of the Access Manager framework was integrated into the relational DBMS Transbase of Transaction Software GmbH.
