In the present thesis, the interaction of inflammatory and biopsychological processes was investigated in a multidimensional approach. In an animal model of multiple sclerosis, the antiinflammatory properties of the antidepressant venlafaxine were demonstrated and the related mechanisms were dissected. To further characterize the impact of inflammatory processes on biopsychological functions an autoimmune model of cognitive impairment was established by active immunization with the neuronal autoantigen amyloid-β. In summary, the results of the present thesis might have direct clinical implications on therapies of neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative diseases.
