The first chapter in this book introduces hypersonic flows and the phenomenon of boundary layers in these high-speed flows. The effect of high temperatures on the flow, the gas composition, and the thermodynamic properties is treated along with the governing equations for reacting flows. A brief introduction to linear stability theory is given, and stability modes are explained. In a second step, typical hypersonic boundary-layer instabilities and scenarios with generic configurations (flat plat, cone, capsule, …) are presented for super- and hypersonic flows.
