This thesis is divided into three main objectives. First, it deals with a literature review trying to obtain the most common structural analysis techniques for later implementation in the model. Basic constructional principles for better understanding of its later numerical representation, are presented. It also introduces guide parameters for dimensioning a segmental lining, some of which are listed below:
– Diameter ranges for TBM tunnels
– Most common offsets (relative axial rotations to avoid crossing joints) between two consecutive rings
– Ranges for lining thicknesses
– Observed ratios between lining thickness and diameter of the tunnel (ca. 1/21)
– Lining thickness for different projects, according to the lining’s diameter and the hydrostatic head
– Most common concrete classes and ranges for early concrete strengths
The second main objective deals directly with the creation of the parametrized bedded frame model. Therewith, the transfer of mechanical and constructional aspects into the numerical representation is deeply discussed. The different steps required for assuring a broad applicability of the model and the corresponding limitations are presented. Load approaches, linear and non-linear joint behaviour and calculation assumptions are explained and applied to the model. Through a validation by comparing results with previous studies and field measurements, the accuracy of the model is confirmed. Finally the developed bedded frame model serves as a base for step three of this thesis: the parameter variation.
At this last step, several variations of both geometrical and material parameters are performed. Some calculation assumptions are questioned and put into test with respect to their influence on the internal forces and deformations of a segmental ring. This study is meant to provide reliable information about dependencies by putting extra care into the ring coupling and hinge interaction of the tunnel structure.
