Wind engineering is a branch of civil engineering. It has been originated as a separated discipline during the informal meetings which held at the national physical laboratory for the building research establishment and elsewhere in UK in the 1960s.It is a quite new and perspective researching area for academic world and engineering industry. The wind engineering does not look like as the same as other engineering disciplines such as electrical engineering or the mechanical engineering. Most of all engineering branches have their own researching and developing concept to establish a whole independent and complete system. But the wind engineering is quite different. It was delivering along with the necessity of other engineering disciplines like civil engineering or energy engineering. The experience of wind engineering is also based on the variety of enormous natural science knowledge and different kinds of resource of human civilization. It combines the knowledge such like meteorology, physics and ocean science together. So the wind engineering can be defined as a total interdisciplinary and modern engineering discipline. For the wind engineering the characteristics of the wind are the most important. Because of all the wind engineering applications concerning the industry and construction problems are related to the basic information of the wind characteristics. The wind velocity profiles, turbulence and spectra are described along with the effects of upstream exposure. Wind speed and turbulence models are made by the researchers and engineers to interpret inhomogeneous upstream exposures. In the application engineers are using boundary layer flows to describe the wind-building interaction. Through modern technology and decades of experiences the designers now can compute the internal and external forces on structures precisely. On the other hand the use of wind energy has been seeing as the most popular method to get clean energy after the hardworking of many engineers and researchers. They have devoted their ability and talent into all these significant areas for almost one generation. It is of course very important for human beings development and progress in civilization history. But there is still a point, which is neglected by the most of us for past decades. In our studies or teaching activities of the wind engineering there are so little attention paid to the history and the development of this engineering discipline. As the same as the other engineering missions the engineers and researchers of wind engineering are willing to solve the various problems in the reality which we confront during the construction, wind energy creation or risk management and so on. Until to now there are few essays or articles resumed the history and the development of wind engineering research, despite many engineers and researchers have made a great progress on not only the knowledge of wind engineering but also on using modern technology to advance our computation, simulation and management process. Due to this reason this dissertation will resume the history and development considering the different aspects of wind engineering. In this work, the general developing path of wind engineering technology will be as a framework. Each aspect of wind engineering will be elaborated in the specific section of this work. It includes the necessity of the research, the developing process, the ideas of wind engineering technology, the computation and simulation methods, the application in our society and the perspectives of wind engineering. Because the orientation of this work is directed to the application of wind engineering in civil engineering, so the majority of this work will demonstrate the development and relationship between wind and different building structures or industrial facilities.
