Due to the ongoing improvement of hard- and software, the application of complex mathematical optimization methods becomes more and more important in the field of engineering. For technical problems the use of con-strained optimization methods enables the consideration of extreme situations and could lead to the solution of the underlying systems of complex nonlinear equations. Within the design process of statically indetermined multispan prestressed concrete beams, the designing engineer has to handle numerous unknown variables and a wide range of design constraints especially regarding the design of prestressing, as for example the position and the overall amount of pre-stressing steel. The application of complex numerical optimization methods lends itself as a support to experienced planning engineers. The following thesis first describes the fundamentals of nonlinear multicriteria optimization and subsequently leads over to the formulation of the basic equations to describe the optimization problems. The chosen structure of these equations enables the global consideration of the relevant design constraints for statically indetermined prestressed concrete structures, and in particular the consistent consideration of the integrally acting statically indeterminable bending moments due to prestressing. The above formulated relations were implemented in to an optimization algorithm used to solve these problems. Finally, the applicability, the efficiency and the limitations of the proposed method are demonstrated on the basis of a practical example.
